Exploring Different Types of Trauma
A Deeper Look at some of the Types of Trauma
There are many different types of trauma, and it is important to understand the different types to better understand the impact of trauma on an individual. The most common types of trauma include physical trauma, emotional trauma, and psychological trauma.
Physical trauma is caused by physical injury or harm, such as a car accident or assault. This type of trauma can cause physical symptoms such as pain, headaches, or fatigue. It can also lead to emotional and psychological symptoms such as fear, anxiety, or depression.
Emotional trauma is caused by an emotional or psychological shock, such as the death of a loved one or physical or emotional abuse. It can cause emotional symptoms such as fear, sadness, guilt, or anger. It can also cause physical symptoms such as headaches, stomach aches, or fatigue.
Psychological trauma is caused by an experience that overwhelms the individual’s ability to cope. This can include experiences such as witnessing a traumatic event or living through a natural disaster. Psychological trauma can cause emotional symptoms such as fear, anxiety, or depression. It can also cause physical symptoms such as headaches, stomach aches, muscle pain, and more.
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a type of trauma caused by a traumatic event. Symptoms of PTSD include intrusive thoughts or memories, nightmares, difficulty sleeping, avoidance of certain activities or people, and changes in mood. PTSD can also cause physical symptoms such as headaches, stomach aches, and fatigue.
Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD) is a type of trauma caused by prolonged or repeated exposure to traumatic events, such as physical or emotional abuse. Symptoms of C-PTSD include intrusive thoughts or memories, flashbacks, difficulty sleeping, avoidance of certain activities or people, and changes in mood. Unresolved trauma can also lead to comorbid (co-existing) diagnoses such as depression, anxiety, and substance use disorder. It is important to seek professional help if you are struggling with unresolved trauma. A therapist can help you to process the trauma and provide tools to help you cope with the symptoms of trauma in an effort to resolve the trauma causing the destress.
