How Trauma Impacts Mental Health
Understanding the Effects of Trauma on Your Mental Health
Trauma can have a profound effect on an individual’s mental health. The effects of trauma can vary from person to person, but some of the most common mental health impacts of trauma include depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Trauma can be expressed both cognitively (in the mind) and somatically (in the body). Cognitively, trauma can manifest as intrusive thoughts or memories, difficulty concentrating, changes in behaviour, and changes in mood. It can also lead to feelings of fear, guilt, shame, and anxiety.
Depression is a common mental health condition that can be caused by trauma. Symptoms of depression can include feelings of sadness, guilt, hopelessness, and irritability. It can also cause physical symptoms such as fatigue, changes in appetite, and difficulty sleeping.
Anxiety is another common mental health condition that can be caused by trauma. Symptoms of anxiety can include feelings of panic, fear, and worry. It can also cause physical symptoms such as sweating, trembling, and difficulty breathing.
Somatically, trauma can manifest as physical symptoms such as headaches, stomach aches, fatigue, and muscle pain. It can also cause difficulty sleeping, changes in appetite, and difficulty breathing. Trauma can also cause people to become hypervigilant, or constantly on alert for danger.
